Large pine weevil
The large pine weevil is a dark brown beetle with a long snout, like a little elephant's trunk. Patches of yellow hair make spots on its back. It loves pine and spruce forests, especially where trees were just cut down.

It finds freshly cut tree stumps by their smell and lays its eggs there.
It gnaws a ring of bark around a young tree's stem, and that can kill the little tree.
A grown-up can live two or three years, which is long for a beetle.

In winter it hides in the forest floor and rests until spring.
