Queens are the biggest ants in the colony, 14 to 16 millimetres long.
Unlike some carpenter ants, it does not chew into wood. It moves into holes that are already there.
A colony can grow to 1,000 workers in its first year and more than 8,000 later.
The biggest workers only guard the nest, while the small ones look after the babies and find food.
It mostly looks for food at night.
