Yellow meadow ant
The yellow meadow ant is a tiny yellow ant that lives almost all its life underground. You might never see the ants, but you can spot their homes: little bumps of soil in lawns and meadows. Living in the dark has made them pale, with small eyes.

Fun facts
It is one of the most common ants in Europe.
On warm days in July and August the worker ants push the young winged ants out of the nest so they can fly away.
Several queens may start a nest together, but later they fight until only one is left.
One big family can have up to 250,000 worker ants spread over many joined nests.
The queen is much bigger than the workers, up to about 9 millimetres long.
